Come mid-May, I’ll definitely have a new balcony garden with appropriate veggies in place — because I’ve signed my space up for the 100 Garden Challenge!

Put together by eco-nonprofit Sustainable Works and the still-relatively-new Westside Permaculture Group, the 100 Garden Challenge’s goal’s simple: To create 100 new gardens on the westside over a single weekend.
Have a big lawn you want to get veggies out of but don’t know where to start? Sign up to grow your own — and click “Yes, I need help with design” — to get the planning underway, and possibly find volunteers to help you with the actual gardening part. Already have a thriving edible garden and want to show off your gardening skills? Sign up to join a garden crew.
When: Sat. May 16 and Sun., May 17
Where: All over the westside
Cost: Free — but you’ll need to provide materials for your own garden
I hear there’ll be an afterparties on the evenings of both nights, though details are still scant right now. If you want to get more involved with the event planning, just come to the next Westside Permaculture Group meeting, happening Tues., April 14 from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at the Santa Monica Main Library, 601 Santa Monica Blvd., Santa Monica.
So join me and sign up your garden-to-be now. I’m not sure that my balcony space is big enough to actually require help…. It’s odd, because I’ve signed up for this big event, but will basically be putting together a garden on my own — though I still fear I’m going to accidentally kill stuff left to my own devices. I’ll need to do some serious planning before then; thanks to everyone who gave me gardening advice!
