My latest drinking companion — a byobag for wine.
You can get these things for either one or two bottles of wine, and say goodbye to those little useless brown paper bags forever.
I found this fashionable wine tote through my friend Anna (pictured here), who’s trying to get people to bring their own bags to the grocery stores, cups to the cafes. Through her site, I found Reusable Bags, and even googled a coupon code (click on “download coupons“) for free shipping.
And while I was at it, I got the lunch byobag (right) which fits my lil coffee travel mug perfectly in its side pocket.
A cool feature is that the bag’s made of neoprene — you know, the wetsuit material — so it’s stretchy and bounces gently in your hand as you happily skip back home to start drinking.
Ok — I just read the bag’s tag, which says the byobag “holds anything in a bottle.” So I supposed you could use it for, say, Yoohoo. But if it’s wine, make it organic!
And if you’re near a Wild Oats, you can buy the wine byobag there, I saw Monday. The bags do come in different colors, but the red, in my opinion, is the most striking. It’s also my fave color. Already, I’ve gotten lots of compliments on it at Trader Joe’s (blush).
BTW — If you bring your own shopping bag to most chain grocery stores, you can get 5 to 10 cents back. At Wild Oats, you can even opt for a wooden nickel which lets you easily donate the money to a charity. No such bonus at Trader Joe’s, but the one in Culver City will enter you into a drawing for a $25 gift certificate!
And at Starbucks and Peets, you’ll save a dime every time you bring your own mug — So take your own mug to the Starbucks Challenge!
Of course, Anna’s had some trouble getting cafes to actually promote this great policy…

I want to say that we are kindred souls, but I think you are way ahead of me! Quite an inspiration! I will check back frequently and next visit to Starbucks I will do the challenge! I keep meaning to!!!

I didn’t know that you could bring your own cup to Starbucks and get a discount. I’ll try it today!

Hey Scottish Toddler! We are indeed kindred souls — living close to each other, no less! Let me know if you’re interested in joining the LA-wide Starbucks Challenge day — on bikes!
And Andrea — I’m guessing the conversion to bringing your own cup won’t be too hard, considering your local Starbucks has started brewing up your fair trade coffee for you as soon as they see you on the road :) But hey — Think of the trees you’ll save! (And the dimes too :)
