How easy is it to get US-made wearables that aren’t made by American Apparel? Not too hard, in San Francisco at least. The greener side’s Elsa and I met up last Saturday to find out.
Since Elsa covered the trip — All over SF Mission — in some detail, I’ll focus more on the goodies — with pictures of the actual stores to come later.
First stop: Otsu, a vegan store where I got a Hempy’s belt (left), made from recycled tires, a bracelet made from recycled spoons.
I also got a vegan chocolate bar, which sounded awesome — a Hazelnut, fair trade product sourced through the Eco-Trade program, made by Conscious Creations Organics, with packaging made of plant cellulose, tree free paper and soy inks. I found the stuff edible, at least, but I gave a Jill, another friend, a bite to try later in the evening — which she promptly spit out…. Not recommended.
Total spent at Otsu: $72.04 after tax.
Next we hit Local Patron, a store where everything’s designed and/or made by local artisans. Here I got a second bracelet (left), made from recycled watch bands — directly from the girl who crafted it :)
Cost of bracelet: $41.23 after tax.
Lastly, Fabuloid, a cute lil boutique that just moved to this new location 8 weeks ago. It buys the ends of the fabric runs in LA, then fashions it into locally designed and made clothes. The place also has a vintage corner, which is where I got these cool shoes (right) and Elsa got a pretty pink blouse.
Cost of vintage shoes: $94.40, after tax.
So I realized I only got accessories — We ran into a lot of American Apparel T-shirts on the way, but I’ve got enough T-shirts, and few of these were organic…
