Cafes for non-LA coffee lovers

Posted by Siel in caffeine, fairtrade (March 26, 2006 at 11:00 pm)

A list of mostly indie coffee shops serving fair trade coffee! The cafe must have a good amount of fair trade commitment to get listed.

In a pinch, some chains you can also:
* Brueggers and Noah’s Bagels always have a fair trade blend brewing
* Tully’s and Dunkin’ Donuts make their espressos from fair trade coffee beans.
* McDonald’s serves organic, fair trade coffee in 658 of its restaurants in New England and Albany, NY.

Don’t have a store near you? You might wanna check out some of these cause-specific fair trade coffees available online.

Don’t forget The Node! - one-hundred percent fair trade certification, though whether all is TFUSA-certified is unknown. Next time I’m in Madison, I’ll do some research and give yuh some names, locations, etc. And, BTW, I’m closing down Earthy, but most of the fair trade stuff I’m relocating to TwoHeroes (in the sidebar).

  2. Jerry at The Change Says:

All the coffee houses that we supply at Larry’s Beans would be 100% Fair Trade. For a list http://larrysbeans.com/coffee/where_to_find_coffee.htm.

  3. morganlf Says:

Stone Creek Coffee has fairtrade. I just bought 5 lbs from them!

  4. Fletch Says:

Looked into it and Alterra is located entirely in the metro Milwaukee area. Indeed, only one of six is located outside the city itself. Hope that helps.

  5. ADB Says:

Davidson, NC has a great independent coffee shop that offers lots of fair trade products: Summit Coffee and Tea (www.summitcoffee.com)

  6. Siel Says:

Hi everyone — I added all the coffee shops I could verify — Please let me know if there are any I missed :)

  7. Fletch Says:

Whoa, I completely forgot about Stone Creek. Thanks for the reminder. I just e-mailed them about their percentage of certified coffee. Hopefully, it will be higher than Alterra.

  8. Sameer Says:

State College PA, has Webster’s Bookstore and Cafe which serves organic, shade grown fair trade (certified) coffee only. [LINK]

  9. Siel Says:

    Cool — Just added Webster’s! Yey :)

    Thanks Emily and erin!

erin — I added Sweetie Pies, but from what I could gather from the Wicked Joe website, the company’s a roaster only without a retail store — But maybe they’ve opened a retail spot? Lemme know if you have more deets :)

  19. Juneau Dining Says:

I missed the Heritage Coffee chain, adding it to my page now. Kudos on a great list.

  20. Siel Says:

Thanks Juneau :) Glad you stopped by –

  21. Joseph Says:

Hey so in Long Beach, Portfolio coffeehouse is indeed a good indy hangout but they don’t have a pot going all the time anymore because they said, “their customer’s prefer the house french roast.”

    BUT

“Hot Java” on Broadway and Junipero(close to Portfolio) has *only* fair trade except for 2 of their brews. AND! (i’m excited because i just found this all out tonight)….AND! they only use triple insulated cups that are 99% recycled material(triple insulated so they don’t need the cardboard sleeves) and they use recycled paper and plastics for their foods and they even have non-dairy whip cream!

    i nearly died.

    =)

    take care!

  22. Siel Says:

Thanks Joseph! I added Hot Java to the list — Makes me want to visit Long Beach :)

  23. Michael Weller Says:

Hi Siel, just stumbled upon your blog and and really like it. Re. Chicano Perk, they’ve moved from their old spot on 25th Street to National City Blvd. in Natl. City. It’s in the 600 block but I’m not sure of the exact number. I’m a San Diego native living in LA, so I’ll see if I can get the exact address next time I’m in the ol’ hometown. Look forward to reading more of your blog in the future!

  24. Siel Says:

Hey Michael — Thanks for dropping by :) I hope you’ll update me on the new addy! Hope you’re liking life in LA :)

  25. Timothy Young Says:

Great list. Food For Thought , a radically green little company from Michigan just launched the first in the nation Fair Trade Certified fruit preserves. We’ve been making them organically for over 11 years, but now we’re FT! Hopefully some of the shops listed here will consider carrying us.
