Anna of bring your own writes about the Starbucks Challenge in the Santa Monica Mirror!
I took the Starbucks Challenge a half dozen times and became fascinated by it. I love that one can engage in a policy-shaping campaign while getting a morning fix.
In my experience (and I share this with numerous others), taking the Challenge has usually gone something like this:
Challenger: “Hi, can I get a cup of Fair Trade coffee please?â€
Barista: “Actually, today we’re brewing the Italian roastâ€
Challenger: “Yes, but I’d like the Fair Trade blend. May I please have that in a French press?â€
Barista: “Um…a) we’re out of Fair Trade; b) it’ll cost you more; c) I can’t find the French press; d) I don’t think we do that.â€
BTW — I’m moving to Santa Monica at the beginning of May! Really psyched — for walkable neighborhoods, running by the ocean, happy hour at World Cafe…

Hi!
I am a recent new reader — so nice to read a local blog about these issues.
Anyway, I wanted to say welcome in advance to the westside and you might want to try the new Coffee Grind on Venice near Centinela (I think they use Groundworks) and not as annoying music as Starbucks either, lol. (And much nicer staff than the World Cafe ever!) Enjoy SM :-)
