Tuesday questions: I’ve been framed

Posted by Siel in questions (Tuesday May 23, 2006 at 10:42 pm)

A series that runs every Tuesday, where I ask questions unrelated to the environment, fair trade, or local politics that I’ve been wondering about but haven’t been able to google the answers to. Any advice is appreciated.

When my whimsical sis came to visit way back when, I asked for decorating help. Her advice: Frame the posters for the most bang for your buck.

I’ve yet to take her advice, and I accidentally ruined a Rothko poster during the move to Santa Monica :(

However, I’m now ready to take action — but am having trouble finding eco-friendly frames. Yes, we’ve got some excellent options for small picture frames, but no big poster-sized frames, as far as I can tell.

Also, I have a tendency to, um, break things. That, combined with the fact that we have earthquakes here, makes me not want to glass-encase my posters, lest they fall and damage me.

What I really want are those cardboard things — the kind of stuff that street artists frame their art with. But I don’t know the technical term for those, which means I can’t google it effectively…

What are those cardboard things called technically, and where can I get them? And — better yet — is there a place where I can get these made with 100% post-consumer materials?

  1. Are you thinking of “mats”?

  2. You might be thinking of mats, as Jasmin says. Another option would be to get your posters mounted on foamcore posterboard. That would keep them in good shape, and it’s light enough to be non-threatening. However, good luck finding either a socially- or ecologically-responsible variety of it. Art materials are not exactly knownn for being either, last time I checked.

  3. You might ask Axil of Green Home, the online green store based in SF. If it’s green, he can probably find it, or might already have it in stock.
    Email him at: axil@greenhome.com

Also, I have an artist friend in Spain who might know, I’ll ask her.
