5 days till prizes

Wow — May’s just flying by! Only 5 more days to get in on Starbucks Challenge 4.0! Remember, we have cool & yummy prizes…

And an FYI about the upcoming Protest Starbucks: National Week of Action June 19th-25th. From the latest Organic Bytes, of the Organic Consumer Association:

STARBUCKS UNDER FIRE FOR USING RBGH MILK & NOT SERVING UP FAIR TRADE COFFEE

Despite over five years of grassroots pressure, Starbucks continues to serve milk from cows that are injected with genetically engineered recombinant bovine growth hormone, also known as rBGH or rBST.

Virtually every industrial country, except for the United States, has banned the sale of rBGH milk. Milk produced from cows injected with rBGH poses serious dangers to human health and the general welfare to dairy cows.

The time has come to kick rBGH off the market, once and for all. If Starbucks, a major buyer of milk, were to reject rBGH dairy products, we could effectively eliminate it from the market completely. Join OCA and allies June 19-25, to protest or leaflet Starbucks cafes in your neighborhood. Help us reach our goal of 300 actions!

rBGH, BTW, is milk with cow pus swirled in. Seriously.

The OCA’s week of action will follow closely on the heels of of Starbucks Challenge 4.0! Maybe we can get a different action going every month, until Starbucks walks its talk and gets up to 5% fair trade coffee. Even one of my fave foodie blogs, Accidental Hedonist, has joined in the call to action :) More info here.

  1. Are their other companies that are using this type of milk? I think the idea of an action week is great it just seems to me that it should be a week against the problem and not just against one company. You know?

Maybe it should be against all companies that serve that milk. It would give better feet to the week because it would not seem that it is an anit-Starbucks campaign.

    Just my thoughts about it..

  2. That’s the exact thing I wondered in my previous post about this Week of Action. While I get that Starbucks makes a lotta lattes and frappuccinos, I see them as a coffee company more than a milk company…. I wondered if maybe somehow Starbucks is like a bigger purchaser of milk than, say, McDonalds with its McFlurries, but I think that’s unlikely…

In any case, I really am not sure why the OCA decided to specifically target Starbucks with the rBGH thing. Which is why, during that week, I’ll be happy to go in and request some fair trade coffee with organic milk, but am not planning to publicly protest…

Also, I drink a lot of coffee, but rarely milk — so I’m more concerned about the former –
