Green Drinks FAQ

Am getting a bit overwhelmed with emails asking me what Green Drinks is and if they can come, so here are some hopefully helpful deets:

What is Green Drinks?
Basically, people with an interest in the environment get together to drink once a month. There’s a West Side one, and an East Side one for the LA area; both put updates on this blog. [Update, 6/5/08: Green Drinks actually has 4 locations now -- new ones are the Valley and Redondo Beach -- with more likely to be added. Check the website!]

What happens at Green Drinks?
People drink, and talk. Also, there’s a guy with a cheese cart that comes around and you can buy a cheese plate [Update, 6/5/08: This dude's disappeared]. Also, there’s a lil bar menu you can order from.

But there’s no agenda, per se. Just like most evenings at a bar, you’ll prolly mingle and meet some people — green people. There’ll be some that’re all business-like who immediately press a business card into your hand, but most people’re simply friendly and relaxed, drink in hand.

Can I come? Do I need an invitation?
Yes! Consider yourself invited :)

Are you sure I can come? I don’t have a green company, car, blog, etc.
Yes, you can come. There are no bouncers who make you pass an “am I green enough” test. If you’re really nervous, say that green LA girl said you should come and make a beeline to my table. I look like this, and love meeting people, esp. after a couple drinks.

However, if you, say, start yelling drunkenly about how Hummers are the best things since sliced bread, you may not make many friends –

Who organizes these Green Drinks? You?
No, not me — I just go for the drinks. Barent of grow-design’s an organizer; I believe there are others too, but I don’t know ‘em. [Update, 6/5/08: Elizabeth and Lauren are also helping organize some of the events; Zach and Jessica organize the Valley Green Drinks]

What’s the point of green drinks? Why should I go?
Ask not what green drinks can do for you, but what you can drink at green drinks. In any case, there is a table where you can put flyers / brochures or whatever to promote your org, cause, blog, if you’re so inclined.

Are the drinks green?
Sadly, no, neither in hue or eco-friendliness. However, I think the organizers are working on that. Also, the West Side one went carbon neutral for one night a month or two ago. [Update, 6/5/08: Depending on the venue, some Green Drinks have organic options available.]

When and where is Green Drinks?
The West Side one’s at the Culver Hotel, 9400 Culver Blvd, Culver City [Update, 6/5/08: Location now varies; check the website!]; it happens on the first Thursday of every month. Yes, that means today! Start thinking about going over after you read this –

Things officially kick off at 7 pm, but as there’s no agenda, there are no strict timelines. I usually come in around 8 and stay for a couple hours.

See you there :)

Update, 1/31/07: Getting to Culver City sans car is a bit of a problem — which is why I’m looking into a Santa Monica Green Drinks –

  1. Cool post, considering I just got back from one, and am focusing intently on my typink skillz! For those up north in the Bay Area, there is East Bay Green Drinks (which I help un-organize), which has an announce-only email list at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SustainabilityHappyHourEastBay/

  2. Cool! I encourage everyone to find their local green drinks — or if there’s none in your area, organize one!

  3. Hi G. LA G:Really nice site. The LA Times quote from you directed me to your site. Couple of questions:

1.Are you planning on doing any reporting on the OC Green happenings? The drive to Santa Monica from Huntington Beach is…long.
2.Is there a place on your site where I can see reviews of SoCal companies making unique, highly differentiated, technologically advanced products?

    Thanks,

    Jeff

  4. Thanks Jeff :) No immediate (or honestly, long-term either) plans to cover the OC, cuz it’s so far away. As for your 2nd Q — My short answer would be no. I’m actually not even sure what would qualify as a “unique, highly differentiated, technologically advanced” product. You could try Engadgeted maybe?
