GOOD coffee tasting

Posted by Siel in art/lit/music, caffeine, fairtrade, losangeles (Thursday July 20, 2006 at 2:59 pm)

So when GOOD magazine, which throws kickass parties, invited me to be part of a blind coffee taste test panel, I was super, super psyched.

And cuz I just don’t have my shit together, I expressed that psyched-ness by arriving 20 minutes late then begging quarters off of Michael of GOOD for the parking meter.

Luckily, they’re nice people at GOOD. Nice people with quarters.

So 8 or so of us tasted 6 different coffees — some fair trade and some not. I was a lil surprised to be the only gal there — aside from Noella, who was pouring the coffee but not tasting….

None of us were professionals — but we all took it really, really seriously. “You guys can talk about the coffees, you know,” we were told, but decided to keep our opinions to ourselves till the end –

At which point we burst into a hyper-caffeinated and super intellectual discussion, i.e.: “I would make love to that coffee. If it’s fair trade.”

Can’t tell ya which coffees we tasted or which got the best reviews till the bit comes out in GOOD — But for now I’m proud to say that my palate lines up nicely with my socio-political values :)

A nice lil piece about GOOD came out in the Wall Street Journal today. Curious? Subscribe for $20, all of which will be donated to an org of your choice, and get invites to cool parties and stuff. The first issue comes out in September –

Update, 9/10/06: The coffee tasting article’s now up!

  1. There is a profile of the publisher, Ben Goldhirsh, in the LA Times this weekend. The story is going to be in Sunday’s paper, but if you close your eyes and say “good” three times, you can alter the space-time continuum just enough to read it right now: http://www.latimes.com/features/magazine/west/la-tm-goldhirsh30jul23,0,3430054.story.

P.S. $20 seems like a good deal just to get invited to parties.

  3. Michael — How’d you get first glance at the LAT article? Do green party peeps have secret super-powers?

Devin — Glad to hear you too endorse GOOD — Esp. since I’ve already forked over my $20 ;)
