Planet Blue: An accidentally eco boutique

Sexy eco-clothes are getting so hot that even the companies that don’t define themselves as green can’t help but jump on the bandwagon.

Case in point: I walked into Planet Blue — a new boutique that opened up on Main Street in Santa Monica last November — after cruising the farmers’ market on Sunday. After all, this boutique’s right next door from Patagonia.

And right up front I saw a buncha cool, 100% organic cotton shirts from Loomstate, Stewart+Brown, and Zen Bunny, a company I hadn’t heard of (and can’t find a website for. WTF?).

To the right is my pick — A super soft and nicely-cut T-shirt from Loomstate, a company that puts sustainability front and center on its mission statement.

So Loomstate Ts don’t come cheap. I got mine for $55, pre-tax, to be exact. That said, that was v. much the AVERAGE price of Ts in this boutique. Meaning you can critique the price of higher-end fashion in general, but you can’t critique eco-high-end stuff for being any more pricey than the pesticide-infused fashions.

Now beware: Not even the majority of the stuff at Planet Blue’s sustainable. In fact, most of the stuff’s — you know — the Nordstrom’s & Barney’s stuff. Theory, Joie, 7 for All Mankind, etc.

But it’s sorta nice to know that 100% sustainable companies have entered the fashion mainstream, yes?

Don’t live in Santa Monica? Check out the store locations for Loomstate and Stewart+Brown. And for the latter, I recommend my friend Summer’s always fair-labor, fair-trade, and sustainable e-store, BTC Elements :)

Planet Blue. 2940 Main St. Santa Monica. 310.396.1767.

Looking for an eco-friendly printer that won’t break the bank for my new notecards! Any suggestions?

Hey Dallas! Do you mean printer as in a company that’ll print up biz cards and stuff for you? Or like a printer you hook up to your computer in case you want hard copies of green LA girl posts? :P
