A practical solution for those damn AOL CDs that just keep comin’ — The CDCoaster kit!
If you, like me, thought, “Um, but there’s a hole in the middle” when people suggested you turn the things into coasters, this kit’s for you. It comes with 6 cork backs, 6 center plugs (to deal with the hole problem), and 6 labels to cover the center plug (optional).
Of course, when I initially got the email from the CDCoaster peeps, I still had more Qs — so I emailed them, and got an answer almost immediately! Dan of CDCoaster let me know that the cork’s harvested sustainably without killing trees, and that the labels are polyester film, which is much better than vinyl :)
And Dan added: “The whole point of the product is to use compact disks, that are otherwise useless, in a constructive manner. We’ve seen estimates claiming that, if they are tossed into the environment, the things will be there for at least 100 years! At the rate CDs are being churned out that’s a whole lot of burden to lay on Mother E.”
Word. We just need to stop getting more & more CDs, or we’ll have too many coasters –
Cost of kit: $14.99 + $5 for shipping. I’m sending away for mine — I need coasters for my new place! Plus I have ideas for a CD coaster decorating partay –
Update, 9/20/06: I made coasters! Yay!

Very cool. Can’t wait to see them!
