Vote! Treasurer

Posted by Siel in environment, feminist/politics (Friday November 3, 2006 at 9:00 am)

How I’m voting for the environment on Nov. 7, 2006, at the state-level. Here’s how I’m voting on the propositions.

My vote for CA Treasurer: Bill Lockyer

What does the CA Treasurer do?: The Treasurer serves as California’s lead asset manager, banker and financier. The Treasurer serves as chairperson or a member of numerous State authorities, boards and commissions.

Bill Lockyer, current California Attorney General, is expected to win this one :) The guy has a lotta govt. experience and has taken some important enviro-actions as Attorney General.

Bill’s running on a platform that promises to “curb state deficit spending; strike better healthcare deals for state workers and retirees; plan for financing improvements of outdated highways, schools and water systems,” which seems to me to sort of be in line with the infrastructure bonds that’re also coming up for vote in the propositions.

The Sierra Club and the California League of Conservation Voters endorse Bill.

More on both Bill and the Republican candidate, Claude Parrish, in this LA Times article.

  1. Hi Siel,

When I debated Lockyear 1-on-1 a few weeks ago on KQED public radio, I was able to plant a few seeds about the need for pushing environmental and social justice by using our Treasury. In fact, my platform has been to encourage the State to invest more money in community development banks and credit unions…something Lockyear had not given any thought to. He’s expressed great interest in my ideas for the State Treasury and I hope to work with him (on a volunteer basis) to implement these ideas after the election.

As far as my limited government experience…what can I say? Bill Lockyear has been in Calfornia politics for over 35 years…is an attorney, not qualified as an Investment Manager, and is now running for Treasurer. This is a slap in the face to the idea of term limits. Sigh…

We need new candidates, new ideas, and new energy in our Government Siel. Otherwise, the past will be our future.
