Trees are more popular than ever, maybe? Kenyan environmentalist Wangari Maathai, 2004 Nobel prize winner, has started a campaign to plant 1 billion trees in 2007.
This tree-planting project’s meant to inspire any and everyone to help fight global warming by planting trees. To get involved, just sign up on the United Nations Environment Program’s website and register the trees planted.
More locally, LA mayor Villaraigosa’s helped launch the Million Trees LA project. This project has a less definite deadline — The plan’s to have these million trees planted in the next several years. Current Million Trees LA tree count: 43,245 trees.
So — Wanna get involved? If you own some property, then plant a tree! You can get trees free via LADWP. To make sure your tree gets counted, register your tree: Here are the registration links for the UN Billion Tree Campaign and for Million Trees LA.
But if you, like me, live in an apt., don’t despair! You can sign up to volunteer to help plant trees with TreePeople by emailing volunteer@treepeople.org. Other orgs are helping with this initiative too; pick one close to you.
In fact, if I’d had my act together and woke up before noon, I coulda made it to the West LA Community Planting today (here’s the TreePeople calendar). While I was sleeping, happy tree lovers planted 30 trees –

Wangari Maathai, Nobel Prize Winner, is also a Green Party member. She started the Green Party in Kenya and was elected to Parliment running as a GP member.
Betcha didn’t hear that in much of the press when she won the prize, did ya?
Of course, Green Party members across the world were extra thrilled when she won.

It’s cool that the Green Party is not a country-specific party :)
