Pope emulates green LA girl!

Posted by Siel in consumerism, green LA girl (December 30, 2006 at 3:30 pm)

Apparently, the pope’s taken to wearing red Prada shoes, like me!

It’s like we’re walking in each other’s shoes –

I learned that and many other fascinating things from the BBC’s list of 100 things we didn’t know last year.

BTW — The whole chicken or the egg debate’s been decided

Tender Greens

Posted by Siel in organic, losangeles, restaurants ( at 12:20 pm)

I noticed the menu boasted free range chicken and line-caught ahi tuna when I walked in, but Tender Greens is even greener than I thought!

This yum lil eatery in Culver City’s “able to get the best produce to the table within hours of harvesting” according to Anne Smith, owner of the New School of Cooking in Culver City.

Apparently, the chefs at Tender Green are partners in organic Scarborough Farms :)

My friend Marci and I visited sunny and airy restaurant a month or so ago. We ordered at the counter, then found a table outside, me with a glass of wine (organic!). Our food arrived momentarily; the ahi tuna was delish.

Tender Greens. 9523 Culver Blvd. Culver City. 310.842.8300.

Watch An Inconvenient Truth on YouTube

Posted by Siel in environment, art/lit/music ( at 8:00 am)

Didn’t make it to the theaters to watch An Inconvenient Truth?

The film’s now freely accessible online, albeit in 9 different sections.

The video — or, in this case, 9 lil videos — are accessible via YouTube. Get a link to each of the 9 via Climate Change Action.

Dishwashing blues

Posted by Siel in consumerism (December 29, 2006 at 6:06 pm)

I finally got that bamboo utensil tray I wanted — There it is to the left!

What getting it’s made me realize: I need silverware. Beyond what you see in the pic, I have exactly 4 more spoons and a couple forks, which were dirty at the time of the photo shoot.

Or I could just serve finger foods only when I have people over –

But since I also got bamboo salad tongs for xmas, I should prolly get forks people can eat salad with. As well as salad bowls.

Since I started trying to do the 100 mile diet, I’ve been cooking like a maniac. I don’t mind the cooking so much — it’s just that afterwards, you have dirty dishes and stuff.

And cuz, as you know, I don’t have much silverware, I have to do dishes constantly :(

Anyone know where I can get eco-friendly rubber gloves?

Eco-lotion collaboration?

Posted by Siel in consumerism ( at 12:12 pm)

Most of you readers wanna opt for green products whenever possible. But as we all know, not all green products are created equal. In fact, some green products just don’t work the way they’re supposed to, and give green stuff as a whole a bad name.

But usually, for most things you’re looking for, there’s at least a few good green options to pick from. So sometimes, I really wanna create a wiki, where green people can evaluate — and maybe even rank — green products.

However, from what I hear, running an informative, clean wiki takes some serious time commitment — which I can’t make.

So how ’bout this — Let’s start with lotions. Lemme know what you think of eco-lotions you’ve tried — whether you liked them, hated them, would buy them again, found them goopy, were grossed out by the packaging, didn’t like having to shake the bottle all the time — whatever.

A couple rules — All lotions we talk about here have to be paraben free. That rules out almost all conventional lotions, as well as a number of self-dubbed green lotions.

I’ll start by talking about Aubrey Organics, a company with a hardcore green mission I love. However, despite the fact that Aubrey’s line’s avaliable at Co-opportunity, I rarely buy the stuff. The packaging’s unattractive, and because the ingredients tend to separate, all the lotions require a vigorous shaking before each use.

In contrast, Bonicca lotions rock. I wrote previously that Bonicca’s lotions were rather pricy, but I’m starting to change my mind — mainly because I LOVE the Bamboo Flower lotion scent. The packaging could be improved, but we’re talking about a lovely, paraben-free, no-shaking-necessary lotion –

Let me know what you think of the green lotions you’ve tried, and I’ll try to put together a roundup of sorts based on your recommendations –

Black Gold avaliable on DVD

Posted by Siel in caffeine, fairtrade, art/lit/music (December 28, 2006 at 9:38 pm)

Inspired to act after watching Black Gold? (film review here). This post’s part of a series for people who’ve seen (or want to see) the film and want to act. [Part VII is here]

Back in October, HopeDance Films got a copy of Black Gold, and arranged a bunch of community screenings all around northern California, as I wrote about briefly here.

Which is to say — If you want to screen Black Gold at schools or other organizations, you can get your own copies of the Black Gold DVD!

The price for the DVD ranges from $50 to $200, depending on who’s buying. More deets on the pricing here. Might be a good New Year’s resolution :)

Finding change for the bus to change

Posted by Siel in de-car-ing ( at 5:33 pm)

For people who have trouble planning ahead — i.e. me — scrounging up exact change for bus fare is a nightmare. There’ve been a couple mornings when I’ve driven to school simply cuz of the change issue. I only had a twenty in the wallet, without enough time to go buy something somewhere to get change for the bus — so I drove.

Yes, I know I should plan better. And I know that I could just get a monthly pass — but the thing is, because school’s served by the MTA system, while home is served by the Big Blue Bus — I used the systems equally. Buying monthly passes for both — which would mean $100+, is just not a sound financial decision, since I ride 20x a month on average.

But today I read the good news that the MTA’s getting new Transit Access Pass (TAP) cards, which should get rid of the change issue altogether!

The cards are still in testing. Right now, only MTA employees, 50 volunteers, and 1,000 UCLA people have ‘em. In the next few months, some businesses are supposed to get these cards —

Unfortunately, the LA Times article had no deets as to when the regular bus rider’ll be able to start using these….

The infrastructure’s going in though — all Metro buses now have computerized fare boxes, and subway / light-rail stations have card vaildators, and the bus systems in Culver City, Santa Clarita and Torrance will start testing card readers soon.

It’s all supposed to be up and running in within 2 years, at which point 11 regional bus agencies will be using TAP, with TAP fare boxes will be installed in buses in LA, Long Beach, Norwalk, Montebello, Gardena, the Antelope Valley and the Foothill area.

A little unfortunately for me, Santa Monica’s never mentioned in the LA Times article. Does this mean that the Big Blue Bus isn’t gonna participate? Hmmm… Will have to investigate…
