Tuesday questions: Call-In day results

Posted by Siel in caffeine, consumerism, organic, questions (Tuesday December 5, 2006 at 3:25 pm)

A series that runs every Tuesday, where I ask questions unrelated to the environment, fair trade, or local politics that I’ve been wondering about but haven’t been able to google the answers to. Any advice is appreciated.

What happened when you called Starbucks about switching over to non-rBGH milk today, per the Call-In Day put together by Food and Water Watch?

I just called, pressed 0 to get a live person, and had a lil chat with a rep called Bronwen. I said I was calling to request that Starbucks switch over to non-rBGH milk.

To my surprise, Bronwen said: “We feel the same way.”

She then said that Starbucks has been having a hard time switching over to non-rBGH milk, because there’s a bit of a shortage. She said that at the moment, 27% of Starbucks’ milk is non-rBGH. By January 2007, the goal’s to get up to 37%, then to get to 100% by end of 2007.

So it looks like Starbucks is taking action, which I’m happy to hear about! Food & Water Watch will need to keep an eye on the situation to make sure the switch happens, but hopefully, in about a year from now, we’ll be able to declare a full victory –

Update: Here’s the Food and Water Watch’s coverage of the action, complete with video and cute pics :) Apparently, Starbucks gave them the same 27% and 37% numbers, but didn’t say anything about going 100%…
