Tuesday questions: Comments and headphones

Posted by Siel in green LA girl, questions (January 30, 2007 at 3:08 pm)

A series that runs every Tuesday, where I ask questions unrelated to the environment, fair trade, or local politics that I’ve been wondering about but haven’t been able to google the answers to. Any advice is appreciated.

First: So I know my bio & faq sez I’ll respond to all comments. But lately — while I heart the majority of the comments that come in — cuz green LA girl readers are intelligent and thoughtful people :) — Sometimes the comments are BOTH off-topic AND self-promotional, and it kinda bugs me.

So I’m thinking of changing that bit in my bio & faq, to read that I’ll respond to comments that seem to require and merit a response. This would, of course, be the vast majority of comments — I just don’t like feeling bound to respond to comments that don’t seem to seek my response, or that seem to seek my response but don’t deserve it.

Let me know if you have violent reactions about this, one way or the other, regarding this new move.

More importantly: My iPod headphones are not working properly. The left ear part is half dead, so the music in my right ear is much louder. That, combined with the fact that these fucking headphones fall out of my ears constantly when I’m running makes me think I need to ditch Steve Jobs’ headphones and get something altogether new.

What’s your recommendation for runner-friendly, uncrappy headphones?

On headphones: after those little stick ‘em in your ear things kept falling out, and I felt silly always wearing a beanie while running to secure them, finally broke down and got some “real” ones. I thought maybe I had defective ears cuz no one else seemed to have this prob…..what a diff the new ones make!

Oops, missed the rec part: I got mine at the apple store on the promenade, they wrap around behind your head rather than over top, work like a charm. Can’t say they’re particularly green….but they make me happy.

ear pod headphone things are not good for your ear drums.

Comments that are off-topic or self-promotional are simply another form of comment spam. I suppose that this should be placed in your bio and faq - “No comment spam please” - or something similar. Remember, it’s YOUR blog. Do as you will.

I have the Sennheiser MX500 Earbuds. I love earbuds as opposed to headphones, and theres a volume control on the cord, so you can adjust without pulling your iPod out of your bag at a sketchy bus stop or something. I’ve had mine for over a year with no problem of breakage, and they only fall out when i’m stretching and my head is upside down :P

Even the earbudy things that went over my ears hurt. The ear bud part is not smaller its just forced to stay in your ear with hooks. Not at all pleasant.

well, it is your blog so do as you want :-)

and now for something off topic:
a while ago i made some comments on housings in Malmö in Sweden. On pages 110-111 in State of the World 2007 there is a story about the city and the said houses. it appears they after all where intended to the energy efficient. they even put up some wind mills to be self sufficient. alas the houses where not as efficient as predicted and also very expensive. so i was on most parts wrong (about it not having a green image), perhaps back then eco-housing was not a big deal in the press, and only the price tags made the head lines.

about the ear plugs: there are zillions out there …

On the question of headphones, I love these:
    http://www.koss.com/koss/kossweb.nsf/p?openform&pc^eb^SPARKPLUG

They are called “sparkplugs”, made by Koss. They fit inside your ear and the little foam earbuds mold themselves to stay secure inside the ear canal. What I like most about them is that the earbud molding-to-fit makes them block outside noise (such as the ambient noise when riding the subway).

I’ve had my pair for a couple of years now and aside from replacing the earbuds once (and Koss will send you a package of a dozen extras for $5), no problems whatsoever …

I’ve never expected a reply to any of the comments. When I comment it’s usually just to let you know I like the information you’ve provided. Johan said it well, “it is your blog so do as you want” :)

I would concur with recommending Sennheiser ear phones. Great make. Ipod ear phones are poor quality.

Ya only respond to comments that you want. (I know this mean ignoring me :) )
