I’m not sure why I always went to Insomnia Cafe instead of Buzz Coffee, just a few blocks further west on Beverly, back when I lived in the Miracle Mile area.
Buzz has a more expansive menu, better lighting, and, most importantly, free wifi –
Now that I’m in Santa Monica, I get nostalgic once in a while and go back to the area just to sit at a coffee shop. I spent a good 4-5 hours writing and reading at Buzz Coffee about a week ago, nibbling on an egg sandwich, sipping a blueberry smoothie, and drinking a few cups of Groundwork Coffee.
Buzz Coffee doesn’t really offer anything new — but it does offer the all the simple things I like in a cafe: Friendly service, decent coffee, comfy chairs, a menu with some healthy options, hours that stretch into the late evening, and, again, free wifi. They’re basic things, but v. few coffee shops seem to offer all of them.
Actually, I remember now why I went to Insomnia — It’s open until 1:30 am, while Buzz closes before midnight. And back then I kept late hours. Still, a 11 pm close is much nicer than my neighborhood 18th Street Coffee House’s cruel 7:30-ish cut off –
Buzz Coffee. 7623 Beverly Blvd. Los Angeles. 323.634.7393. Sun - Thu 7 am - 11 pm; Fri - Sat 7 am - 12 am.

Ooh, I wish I’d seen this about 15 months ago when I was vainly trying to find some place open after 10p to do some writing on a Sunday night. I ended up at Norm’s.
The wifi, though, I think I’d rather not have. It’s too potentially distracting.

Yeah I love 18th Street but their hours are a bummer. Not being open on Sundays kills me as it seems that’s always when I get the urge to walk down there and relax for a bit.

Wrote about Velocity a while back. I like that place too :)
I’m still looking for good late night cafe options closer to me though –
