On the eastern end, Broadway’s more or less a residential street with nice bike lanes — Helen’s Cycles, where I got my bike, is on 25th — until around 10th, when it starts getting busy.
The newish Bodega Wine Bar (left; image by Omar Bárcena) has a great happy hour — $4 glasses plus deals on yummy food, though I wish they had more dishes that aren’t so cheese-centric . If you stay on the place gets really busy in the evenings (yes, there’s valet), and if you close out the bar, late night Swingers is next door for your 2 am snack.
Farther west’s Juliano’s Raw, which I’ve yet to try — I hear the food’s v. v. garlicky, but I like garlic. Across the street from Juliano’s: My fave Flexcar spot.
Right before the beach, you’ll see our sad, dying mall, Santa Monica Place, to the left, and our very vibrant, touristy shopping strip, Third Street Promenade, to the right.
You’ll see below I’ve switched the map to the southern part of Santa Monica. The city’s pretty much bisected by the 10 freeway, which may disrupt my traversing the streets that run north-south a bit –
[The kickoff post’s here; dark red lines mark the streets I’ve walked so far]

Update, 6/20/07: Here’s Colorado and Olympic.
