Uninventing suburbia: Hot topic of the week

Great minds think alike — or have similar Netflix queues. Right after writing the review for “End of Suburbia,” I saw that the NY Times has a couple pieces about un-suburbanizing.

In the Fashion & Style section, Alex Williams notes that more suburbanites are getting enviro conscious. Some suburbanites are taking steps and organizing to reduce their carbon footprints right where they are, and some experts say that just a little more density can do a whole lot of enviro-good. Others are becoming urbanites.

Then, Andrew C. Revkin of NYT’s blog Dot Earth chimes in, citing “End of Suburbia,” pointing to a few other blogs exploring de-suburbanizing issues, and committing himself to additional research: “I’ll be exploring efforts to “uninvent” suburbia in industrialized countries — and how to avoid having it be the new norm around cities in fast-growing developing countries.”

Maybe he’ll start by watching “Escape from Suburbia”? Here’s the preview:
