Help me help you win stuff, etc.

Things I think are self-explanatory — i.e. “comment or email to get into the drawing” — are sometimes only so in my own head. Lately, an increasing number of people have been trying to get in the drawing for freebies unsuccessfully — so here’s an extraordinarily detailed 3-part guide. To win, you need to either:

1) Leave a comment NOT on this post, but on the post with the title that begins with the words “Friday freebies” or “Wednesday freebies,” making sure to put in your email in the box labelled email. That way, I know which drawing you’re entering, and how to contact you if you win the prize.

Common mistakes:

* Leaving a comment not on the freebie post, but on a post that said post links to. For ex — If you read a freebie post about a book, then click over to read a review I wrote about the book on Emerald City blog, DON’T leave the comment on that review post because you won’t be entered into the drawing. I’m not allowed to give away stuff on Emerald City due to legal reasons. Instead, click back to the original freebie post and leave your comment there.

* Leaving the email field blank. This gives me no way to contact you if you won, so you forfeit your prize. I used to put all names into the drawing — and if I drew a no-email winner, would just announce the winner in a new comment in the hopes that the winner would see it and contact me. However, that pretty much never happened; I’d end up waiting forever, then finally selecting another reader who did put in their email. So now I just eliminate the no-email peeps at the get go. Don’t get eliminated; put in your email.

* Leaving a snailmail address in the email field. Usually, I have a hard time deciphering these addresses, and have to disqualify the entry due to the same reasons as the no email issue.

OR

2) email ME at greenlagirl@gmail.com letting me know you want to be in the drawing.

Common mistake:

* Using the “Email this post” feature at the bottom of each post to send the post to a friend. The last thing I want to do is encourage people to forward posts that they normally would not have forwarded simply to get into a drawing. That makes it seem like I’m encouraging eco-spam! But if you’re using that feature to simply encourage your friend to enter the drawing, then that’s cool — Just make sure you also take either steps 1 or 2 above if you also want to be in the drawing.
_____

Also — If you’re one of many people who’ve sent me an “Invitation to connect on LinkedIn”: I’m not joining, and it’s not cuz I hate ya. It is because LinkedIn says it’s about a “professional network,” and that sounds kind of like, not fun. I think I’m just going to stick to my less professional network on facebook — so feel free to add me as a bloggy friend there –

Lastly: I think the cute li’l green patch kids on Facebook are cute, and I’ve been getting and sending them — but I have no fucking clue what they actually do or how they save the rainforest. Anyone else know?

  1. Green patch- Greenwashing for Facebook Pages…?
They sit on your facebook page and look cute. Okay, they’re kind of (really) obnoxious, I know. It is basically a cute little spamming-slash-pet program, like most of the apps on facebook.

For every 10 you send to your friends, the application supposedly purchases one (1) square foot of rainforest, out of advertiser/sponsorship dollars they’ve received from you spending time on their app. Also, the plants are supposed to die, I think, if you go too long without caring for them? They might say which org they benefit, but I can’t access facebook at the moment.

There are better apps & programs, though I get distracted by the li’l green patch stuff too. I’m partial to the carbon-neutral one and the save the rainforest vocab app (65 sq feet so far, in not that much time), because both seem to accomplish more and be more genuine in their efforts to help (as far as I can tell). Even Click to Give seems better (you can add any of their sites, although everyone seems to be stuck on the hunger site one), although I’ve had the same questions you have now about that and Care2 when they first started.

But, neither of those have cute little anime plant people, nor do they have as many bragging rights.

  20. Clearly, most of the commenters here are people uninterested in following directions. I’m closing off the stream here; please actually read the post if you’re interested in winning a freebie –
