Tuesday questions: Shampoo co-op?

Posted by Siel in consumerism, questions (March 25, 2008 at 1:30 pm)

Your turn to help me –

The shampoo obsession continues! So when I reviewed the eco-friendly and awesome EO shampoo, I sort of joked about getting a shampoo co-op together to save money. But since then, this shampoo co-op idea has gained traction and is really going to happen. Do you want to join the co-op?

Why you should: EO offers its Chamomile & Honey shampoo and conditioner in gallon jugs — which would lets the eco-hair obsessed reduce and reuse bottles while saving money. The 8 oz bottles I got at the Co-op each cost $7.99 — about a buck an ounce; the gallon jug would bring that per-oz cost to under 50 cents!

Reader April has already roped 3 other people to joining in the clean hair fun. We would meet up every month to 6 weeks or so for a shampoo party, where everyone brings their empty bottles, fills up, and — I dunno — shares hair tips? My current plan is to somehow turn this into a recurring happy hour, but the actual format of the shampoo fill-up will depend entirely on the consensus of the co-op members-to-be.

So free yourself from parabens and 1,4-Dioxane and get clean hair! Email me at greenlagirl@gmail.com, and lemme know if you want to be part of the shampoo co-op. The first shampoo fest will be in mid-April –

I’m also taking name suggestions for said co-op — something that sounds less crunchy than shampoo co-op…..

Update, 4/4/08: A prob with the co-op! EO’s ranking suddenly changed

I’m soo interested! I’m allergic to so many kinds of shampoos that this sounds interesting to me.

I recently started showering every other day instead of daily, and I use a little B&B brown hair powder to refresh in between washes. I imagine that’s a lot of gallons of water saved.

Just thought I’d suggest this since we are on the subject of hair washing and helping the environment. :-)

Hi, Just bought my EO yesterday, so I’m in starting in May.

Do we have to participate every month? I don’t use that much shampoo but I’d like to try it. For a name, how about “hair share”?

Re showering, I wouldn’t like to skip a day, but I do sometimes opt for japanese-style basin-and-stool washing. Basins like these can be bought in dollar stores. Also, in warmer months I put a pail in the shower to catch extra water for watering plants on my patio.
