I’ve joined the 29-Day Giving Challenge

Posted by Siel in challenges (Monday April 14, 2008 at 9:48 pm)

Thanks to Britt’s encouragement, I’ve joined the 29-Day Giving Challenge. The goal: To give away one thing a day for 29 days.

Join me! Lemme share reasons why I’m doing this, and hopefully that’ll spur you to join too:

1. I’ll be happier. In case you missed it, the latest psych studies shows that money can indeed buy happiness — if you spend it on others. Elizabeth Dunn, one of the researchers of the study, says “most people don’t realize the personal benefits of charity.”

2. I have too much stuff. The challenge comes at a good time for me, because the twice-weekly freebies aren’t coming around quickly enough and my apartment’s getting crowded. But I’ll include stuff other than the freebies here in the 29-Days Giving Challenge too, and blog the process.

3. I think it’ll be fun and challenging. I have a fondness for monthly challenges — and though I’m not sure why this particular challenge lasts 29 days, I’ll roll with it –

4. I’ll have a chance to be creative. I plan to dream up odd and ingenious ways of giving –

Notice that my reasons for giving are all bout — me! But hopefully it’ll be beneficial for others too :)

Lastly: A couple causes I’ve already given to this month (besides the usual freebies) — and thus won’t count for the challenge — but perhaps might be causes you’d be interested in giving to too:

>> Longtime LA blogger and photographer eecue (aka David) is walking in the Revlon Run/Walk for Women and looking for sponsors. Help fight women’s cancer, while encouraging more guys to get involved in the effort! I did this walk 8 or so years ago :)

>> Help fair trade fruit company Oké USA buy a Bobcat Excavator! Why? El Guabo, a fair trade banana co-op in Ecuador, has experienced devastating flooding. The Bobcat will both help undo the damage and prevent / mitigate the impact of future floods. Your tax-deductible contribution will go directly towards purchasing the Bobcat.

Check out my challenge page here — and lemme know if you decide to join too! You don’t have to spend a lot to get happy — $5 (and prolly less) can still boost your mood.
