Tuesday questions: CPA on the west side

Posted by Siel in questions (April 15, 2008 at 8:29 am)

Your turn to help me –

Don’t worry — I’ve filed my taxes for 2007 — and even sent in my estimated tax for this first quarter of 2008. But since I’m officially going to be transitioning (aka changing what I write in the “occupation” box) from full-time student to self-employed writer, I really need help with taxes and stuff going forward.

Got recommendations for a good CPA? JediWright suggested Hutchinson & Bloodgood, but the’re kinda far away. I’m hoping to find someone in Santa Monica or very close to it –

  1. Jason Says:

In the past, when my wife had a business, we used and recommend Dave Hernamdez (lataxguy.com) for taxes. He’s great with taxes, but is not CPA and can’t help accounting. He lives in Echo Park though.

I’ve used TurboTax with success, and it’s covered full-time work, freelance work, and game show winnings.

  3. Chief Family Officer Says:

My father-in-law has been with CBIZ for years (they’re at Wilshire and Federal, I think). He’s self-employed and said he likes being with a big firm because he thinks it makes him less likely to be audited. Something to think about if you’re going to be self-employed also . . .

I suggest Steve Coker at cokertax at prodigy.net - a guy who understands folks with alternative lifestyles who spends a good part of his time as the gardener (with an arrangement with the city) who maintains the 10 freeway verge with wildflowers and shrubs and perennials in our neighborhood, making it a great source of beauty instead of an eyesore.
