Wednesday freebies: A PHD

Posted by Siel in freebies (Wednesday July 23, 2008 at 7:43 am)

A twice-weekly sharing of eco-shwag.

I’ve got two PhDs now, since a fair trade company called LiveLoveCatch.com sent me a fair trade PHD.

These are basically frisbee-shaped cotton discs — mainly intended as a safe toy. Those avoiding plastic could use it as a frisbee, or invent games like iGolf to entertain kids indoors. The company selling them are also trying to point out that the PHDs are good for anything you can think of requiring soft, crocheted cotton discs; suggestions include using them as cobwebs cleaners or cushions.

PHDs are hand-crocheted by women from Guatemala working under fair trade conditions. The material’s currently conventional cotton from Guatemala, but Rachel of LiveLoveCatch.com says the company’s also working on an organic version.

One green LA girl reader will win a red and black PHD. Comment or email by Friday to get into the drawing, which’ll happen Saturday. US addresses only.
