The Green Life: Main Street Santa Monica’s new eco shop

Posted by Siel in consumerism, environment, losangeles (Wednesday August 27, 2008 at 2:45 pm)

Santa Monica’s got a new green lifestyle store! The Green Life opened on Main Street just last month, offering everything from the eco-basics — like Tom’s toothpaste and Seventh Generation cleaning products — to unique green gifts — like pretty organic decorative pillows and Terrapass chocolate bars.

Unlike many of the green boutiques that focus on higher-end, luxury items, The Green Life’s inventory tends to be very practical and down to earth. In fact, the store’s arranged practically too, with items grouped by category. Eco-friendly doggie toys and collars are collected onto one table, while organic baby bibs and eco-friendly diapers get its own corner.

Green beauty and personal care products get an entire wall:

Basic bed and bath stuff for environmentalists are available too:

And for those starting fall classes, there’s a back to school table:

The Green Life’s owner Scott O’Brien (below) basically turned the final project for his business degree into an eco-store.

And he’s throwing a grand opening party this weekend, kicking things off with appetizers by Euphoria Rawvolution and organic wine on Friday afternoon. All are invited –

What I really wanted: An herb gardening kit (below), complete with gardening gloves! Unfortunately, the thing was too big for my bike basket, so I’ll have to make a second trip soon –

The Green Life. 2409 Main St., Santa Monica. 310.367.3215. Mon., Wed - Sat. 10 am - 7 pm; Sun. 8 am - 6 pm. Closed Tues.

  1. Looks like a nice store. I’m assuming he doesn’t use air conditioning? Looks like in the last picture that he’s doing the whole “leaving the doors wide open AC trick.” I hope I’m wrong!

  2. Hi,

The A/C has not been run since I opened the store. Luckily it has a concrete floor and brick walls, so it stays naturally cool!

    Thanks,
    Scott

  5. After reading the post, I made a note to go to the store today. It’s a great place! Lots of variety, and I was able to buy the Preserve razors I’d been interested in trying. I’ll be back for birthday and Christmas gifts.
