And now for fair trade condoms

Posted by Siel in consumerism, fairtrade (Saturday September 8, 2007 at 10:45 am)

The French Letter Condom Company’s set to bring fair trade condoms to the market next month.

“Our motto is ‘Fairplay’ – so we’re saying have fun, be ethical, be safe and do it with style,” according to a French Letter rep quoted in New Consumer.

What’s fair trade about them? The condoms’re made from rubber sourced from a plantation that meets fair trade criteria, where workers get a fair wage and other benefits. Incidentally, this rubber — sourced via FairDeal Trading — is the same stuff used in fair trade soccer balls

No news on when the fair trade condoms’ll hit the US though. In the meantime there’s eco-friendly lube. And not creating new Americans is in general a v. eco-friendly practice –
