Actually, Martin, the worst case scenario has already happened once. The current standard of bananas only came about in the late 50s/early 60s. Prior to that, it was a different variety of banana, Gros Michel, which was the standard banana (in fact, the demise of Gros Michel was anticipated to be the demise of banana eating, so inferior is the Cavendish to it).

It's definitely worth checking out Koeppel's book on the banana. You'll learn far more than you thought there was to know.

That's very interesting information. I never realized it before--how there's only 1 variety of bananas at the grocery store, but a dozen varieties of apples.

Bananas are a pretty rare sight at my house, it's an interesting coincidence that I bought some today. I am in Africa, a continent that produces bananas and yet the ones I bought today are from Ecuador. I felt guilty, but one of my kids is not a fan of oranges, the fruit that is local and cheap.

This worst case scenario with bananas being wiped out across the globe seems far fetched. The spread of coffee rust in the 1800s is a good example of what can happen with monoculture. Britain's coffee in Sri Lanka and India was devastated but the crop was unaffected elsewhere for decades. The fungal disease didn't show up in Brazil until 1970.

Oh dear! My son loves bananas. Better let him enjoy them while he can - and yes I am buying organic ones.
