Best face forward

Posted by Siel in beauty, environment, organic (Wednesday May 31, 2006 at 6:23 pm)

Since I’ve become totally disillusioned by The Body Shop’s products — and a lil bewildered by the bizzare ways its sale to L’Oreal is affecting the fair trade movement — I’m putting a new, healthier face forward.

Now this whole process took me a while, cuz I decided to finish off my old stuff before moving on to the new ones. Below: My before and after products, each with a report from EWG (Environmental Working Group) rating its safety from 0 (low concern) to 5 (high concern).

After: Avalon Organics Vitamin C Moisture Plus Lotion with SPF 15: Score 1.4 :)

Before: The Body Shop Vitamin E Moisture Cream: Score 3.8 :(
After: Avalon Organics Daily Moisturiser, Lavender: Score 1.6 :)

Before: The Body Shop’s facial wash: Score 3.1 :(
After: Avalon Organics Facial Cleansing Gel: Score 1.7 :)

Before: Body Shop Vitamin E Eye Cream: Score 2.8 :(
After: Aubrey Lumessence rejuvenating eye creme: Score 0.5

I got everything at Co-opportunity, now just a short bike ride from my place –

  1. I loooooove Avalon Organics. You might want to also check out Nature’s Gate Organics products as well – their mandarin orange & patchouli shampoo and conditioner are absolutely to DIE for…and no parabens or SLS…and people will ask to smell your hair (if you’re into that)

    :)

  2. I am really interested in this topic, but I can’t get any(!) results (even for the products you checked) – how did you do it???
and how come the over-all score is e.g. for your “The Body Shop Vitamin E Facial Day Lotion with SPF 15″ is 3.9, when the worst ingredient-score is 1,8???

  3. P.S: I have to be precise – I do get results for the Avalon products, but non for Body Shop products…
(and just yesterday, my girlfriend got a new “Love Your Body”-card…)

  4. Hey Gernot — The links are working for me, for both the Avalon and Body Shop products… The reports for the Body Shop are marked as “draft product reports” on the site — maybe that’s the problem?

Macrogal — I’m still working on finishing off my old shampooo & conditioner from the Body Shop, but I’ll def. check out Nature’s Gate once I’m done –

  5. Check out our products! We get a 0-3 (very low) hazard rating on Environmental Working Group’s searchable database. http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/
It is so important to learn to read the ingredients in your products – most major companies on jumping on the green bandwagon when they insert just a few ingredients that at some point were natural and claiming their products are organic or natural. If you can’t eat it why would you put it on your skin!

  6. Thanks for the note, Ashley. I’ll look into Golden Path :)
