Wrote Marc, one of the producers of the film Black Gold, via an email yesterday in response to the review I wrote:
“You have really grasped the point of our film. We simply wanted to tell an engaging story that would reach out to the widest audience possible and show a different way of looking at the world all through their coffee cup – and see how the things that we love and enjoy can actually affect the lives of many millions of people in poorer countries around the world.
“Whilst I can understand that those in the fair trade movement might feel disappointed that we have failed to address the details of why/how/when etc the coffee price is so low and what fair trade does, it just wasn’t our intention to make that kind of film. We wanted to avoid over analyzing the issue in order to make a powerful story that works in the cinema and will provoke people into wanting to do something.
“Our hope is that through the cinema release of Black Gold it will provoke a debate about many issues (which can take place in spaces like yours and on our own Black Gold Forum), and anyone wanting to find out about all those extra details can find it in the Take Action section on our website (in 2 weeks time – still writing up now) where there will also be links to other websites. So, Black Gold is more than just a film – its a dialogue and an event that right now is spreading across the world both in cinemas and online.”
Again, the film’ll be at Arclight Hollywood between August 18 – 24, and will be in theaters all over the country in September and October,
Please do what you can to get people to the theaters –
