Posted by Siel in bbc, de-car-ing, events (Wednesday October 21, 2009 at 2:22 pm)

Travel car-free to Blogger Beach Cleanup for a chance to win a Clif Bar Prize Pack!

Clif Bar Prize Pack

Walk, bike, or take public transportation to the Blogger Beach Cleanup on Oct. 24, and you’ll be entered into a drawing to win:

>> A Terracycle bag made from upcycled Clif bar wrappers
>> A box of Clif bars
>> An organic cotton Clif T-shirt for men
>> An organic cotton Luna T-shirt for women
>> A Luna cap and pair of socks (these don’t seem to be particularly green)

Sorry, carpoolers will not be entered into the drawing — and walking a few steps from the beach parking lot to the cleanup spot won’t count. So think of this Clif Bar Prize Pack as your motivation to travel green to the event — We’ve already put together eco-friendly travel directions for you!

Clif Bar’s well known for supporting eco-friendly transportation through initiatives like the Clif Bar 2 Mile Challenge. All volunteers will get free Clif Bars to snack on — as well as free drinks from Guayaki. Plus, we’ve got free reusable bottles and totes for the first 70 volunteers to arrive, lots and lots of prizes, and a yummy happy hour at Pourtal.

  1. I hope this isn’t taken the wrong way, but for some of us that don’t live in Santa Monica or somewhere within a couple of miles of SM, using public transportation, bicycles or walking to get out to SM for a 20 minute clean up is a little… time inefficient? I’d have to give myself nearly 2 hours in each direction and I live adjacent to a train station. Even if the mystical subway to the sea existed, the ride would take a considerable amount of time. I’d probably be more inclined to join in if the clean up lasted a bit longer, although I know that doesn’t support the whole spend-only-20-minutes cleaning idea.

  2. Convenience really depends where you live and where the bus lines are, as opposed to just distance. People in downtown LA, for ex, can actually take the BBB 10 and Tide line and get to the event with relative ease.

But I hear you with some trips being quite difficult. In your case, grab some friends and carpool! You can all eat extra Clif bars as consolation for not being eligible for the car-free prize.

  3. Though I see the argument about time inefficiencies, perhaps you can look at another way. What do you gain in that time? A different way to transition through the city. A different way of looking at L.A. than one you normally would. You can sit back and take the trip in without driving. You can read a book, really enjoy the music you listen to, talk to your friend, make a new one, or just look out the window. You can mix it up and take the 720/920, though you have to add a connection from there to Ocean Park – and I’m not too familiar with SM either to give a good recommendation on that.

My final point, though, is how much time do you really think you’ll save? Driving from Downtown, K-Town or elsewhere WILL take quite a while. If traffic is at all bad on the 10, it will near the time it takes along Venice, time spent in frustrating, annoying time behind the wheel, time again that can be spent listening, enjoying, contemplating or socializing.

Perhaps the argument, if you see this as not a valuable reason to take transit, is to find an action closer to home. Ultimately, you’ll make the decision on what is the best use of time and the best impact you can make on the world and I don’t fault you for that. But realize that it’s not a straight transition between the car and transit. There are trade-offs for each.
