What do you gain in that time? A different way to transition through the city. A different way of looking at L.A. than one you normally would. You can sit back and take the trip in without driving. You can read a book, really enjoy the music you listen to, talk to your friend, make a new one, or just look out the window. You can mix it up and take the 720/920, though you have to add a connection from there to Ocean Park - and I'm not too familiar with SM either to give a good recommendation on that. My final point, though, is how much time do you really think you'll save? Driving from Downtown, K-Town or elsewhere WILL take quite a while. If traffic is at all bad on the 10, it will near the time it takes along Venice, time spent in frustrating, annoying time behind the wheel, time again that can be spent listening, enjoying, contemplating or socializing. Perhaps the argument, if you see this as not a valuable reason to take transit, is to find an action closer to home. Ultimately, you'll make the decision on what is the best use of time and the best impact you can make on the world and I don't fault you for that. But realize that it's not a straight transition between the car and transit. There are trade-offs for each. Though I see the argument about time inefficiencies, perhaps you can look at another way. People in downtown LA, for ex, can actually take the BBB 10 and Tide line and get to the event with relative ease. But I hear you with some trips being quite difficult. In your case, grab some friends and carpool! You can all eat extra Clif bars as consolation for not being eligible for the car-free prize. I'd have to give myself nearly 2 hours in each direction and I live adjacent to a train station. Even if the mystical subway to the sea existed, the ride would take a considerable amount of time. I'd probably be more inclined to join in if the clean up lasted a bit longer, although I know that doesn't support the whole spend-only-20-minutes cleaning idea.
