Broken glasses and a bus trip

Posted by Siel in bus/rail,consumerism,de-car-ing (Thursday June 8, 2006 at 11:37 am)

Since I moved to Santa Monica about a month ago, I’ve broken 3 of my roommates glasses. I’ve also broken 2 of my own, but that’s not an issue cuz they’re mine.

In any case, I gotta replace these, not only cuz I just feel bad about breaking other people’s stuff but also cuz we’re just running out of glasses in the apartment…

Luckily, I found out where I can get the exact glasses I broke: at IKEA. They’re called SVEPAs, and they’re only $5.99 for a 12 pack.

Are they eco-friendly? I’m guessing the glasses themselves aren’t, particularly. However, IKEA itself’s pretty awesome. According to Treehugger, the company’s “selling organic food and clothing, fashionable green interior designs, solar panels on roofs, buying carbon credits, installing wind mills in parking lots, and, now charging for disposable plastic bags (in the UK).”

And in order to green my trip, I’m bussing it. Yes, to Burbank, where the nearest IKEA is. My trip — I’d like to think — will also support MTA’s ad campaign: Free yourself. Go Metro. :)

And I was gonna do this today, until I realized the trip’ll take like 2-3 hours — one way — according to the MTA trip planner. That’s cutting it a lil close, cuz I have to be at a Fair Trade LA steering committee meeting by 7 pm.

So the big trip’s pushed back till tomorrow. In the meantime, I’m loading up my ipod with podcasts –
