Car-free Angelenos wanted for docu-photo project

De-car’d yet? If so, Diane Meyer wants to take your picture.

Diane, a car-free Assistant Professor of Photography at Loyola Marymount University, got a grant from the California Council for the Humanities California Stories Fund to photograph and collect stories from Angelenos who have recently chosen to give up their cars. Now, she’s interviewing and taking photos for the project. Her goal’s to get 100 car-free participants; so far, she’s about a fifth of the way there.

Once the project’s completed, the photographs will be exhibited at the 18th Street Arts Center in Santa Monica in Spring of 2009 and there will be a panel discussion about transportation alternatives that will be held in conjunction with the exhibition.

Above’s a pic I took of Diane yesterday, when she came over to interview and photograph me. Not only are we both car-free, we’re actually neighbors in Santa Monica too!

Wanna participate? In addition to getting to be part of the project, you’d get a nice copy of your photo. Interested people can contact Diane Meyer by emailing dmeyer9@lmu.edu.

  1. A huge problem with biking (to be car free)is the security factor of parking it. If it doesn’t completely disappear, it may be stripped. I live in a bike friendly city & it’s just ridiculous that you can come outside & discover your seat stolen. If you want to bike to work, where can you put it to find it again, 8 or 9 hours later? We need to revolutionize this issue.

  2. It’s helpful to have a bike that’s not too snazzy, but theft is def. a prob with anything, really, in urban areas…. Pushing the city for more bike lockers may be one way to try and address the situation.

A DIY solution for now: Uglify yr bike.
