It is sad but true — I am not a canner or jammer.
I love the idea of canning and jamming — saving whatever local, organic bounty there is during the harvest season and making yummy salsas, pickles, jams, and what have you to enjoy year round. I love the idea so much that when Ball emailed me back in June asking if I’d like to host a home canning party on National Can-It-Forward Day on August 13, I enthusiastically accepted the challenge.
Ball quickly sent a Ball Canning Discovery Kit and lots of other canning goodies to get me started. I did not move so quickly.
Blame it on work and, well, more work — August 13 came and went without my ever opening Ball’s package. To try to motivate myself to get canning and jamming, I signed up for LA Food Swap with my composter buddy, Ellen. I then canceled on Ellen and LA Food Swap.
When I moved back to Santa Monica in September, I finally opened up the package — to discover that in order to can and jam, one needs a large stockpot in which to boil jars. I had no such large stockpot — and didn’t want to buy one without ever having actually tried jamming or canning.
Fast forward to the end of the year. The Ball Canning Discovery Kit still sits unopened. I have not learned to jam or can — but I have learned that I clearly have neither the time nor strong inclination necessary to motivate myself to learn to jam or can.
One girl’s procrastination problem is another’s jamming and canning party in the making. Want the Ball Canning Discovery Kit — along with a collapsible funnel, a jar lifter, dissolvable labels, and a a whole bunch of pectin, fiesta salsa mix, kosher dill pickel mix?
