Today’s giveaway is for the ocean lover! One lucky green LA girl reader will win a copy of “Plastic Ocean,” a new book that both illuminates the plasticky problem in our oceans and shows us what we can do about it.

“Plastic Ocean” is written by Capt. Charles Moore — an eco-famous oceans advocate who’s been studying plastics in the oceans for years. In this book, Charles talks about discovering the swirling vortex of plastic waste that’s now best known as The Great Pacific Garbage Patch in the Pacific Ocean.

What does that means for marine life? How does that affect our food supply? Find out by reading “Plastic Ocean” — then join Charles’ call to action to actually do something about the problem.

Friday freebies: Salad Daze cookbook

Posted by Siel in freebies (Sunday November 6, 2011 at 1:44 pm)

Weekly green giveaways.

Today’s giveaway is for the intrepid vegetarian cook. One lucky green LA girl reader will win a copy of “Salad Daze: The Hot Knives Vegetarian Cookbook“!

“Salad Daze” is the creative cookbook from the two L.A. dudes behind the popular foodie vlog Hot Knives. These boys are known to make delicious vegetarian food that’s rich, bold, and innovative — all from scratch using farmers market produce.

Naturally, I wanted to review the cookbook — but I’m now giving it away without trying any of the recipes myself. Why not? Honestly, I don’t have the time or energy or stomach required by these cool one-of-a-kind recipes!

Let me explain. These boys clearly love their beer and their cheeses and their fats — which means many of the recipes in their book won’t really do it for a lactose-intolerant non beer-drinking gal who’s not all that into fried foods (too greasy). They also seem to enjoy spending a helluva lot of time in the kitchen — which is full of all sorts of specialized cooking implements; I have neither this time nor the specialized implements.

Thus, this book is not for me. But if you’ve been longing to make Pumpkin Ale Muffins to kick off your Thanksgiving Day morning, Booze-Infused Peppercorns to put on your lunch, and Beer Candied Apples to enjoy for dessert, this book’s for you.

And with the recipes come beer pairings and funny stories — including a angry diatribe about a PETA recipe competition (“we made it, tasted it, and wrapped it in a bow, only to find out that when PETA says ‘vegetarian’ they mean ‘vegan.’”) and a funny story about near-force feeding LA Weekly food critic Jonathan Gold some of their nosh.
