Jetlag for the morning after

Posted by Siel in travel, cooperstown (June 26, 2006 at 10:03 am)

[left: a view of Cooperstown]

Of the 4 planes I took to Cooperstown and back, all 4 were delayed. Finally got home at 2:30 am or so last night — and cuz my internal clock is tots off, popped up at 9 am.

9 many not seem early to you, but since I usually get up between 11 and 1, I’m now doing double and triple takes at the morning light outside, marvelling at how surreal it looks. Yes, I know sometimes posts go up here around 9 am — That means I wrote them the night before, as my friends who’d call me after reading them, assuming I was up, have found out –

This is all to say that, as usual after travelling, I feel totally overwhelmed by all the e-stuff I’ve gotten behind on — to the point of a blogging block.

So today I’ll mostly work on replying to comments and updating my wistlist, a few posts below. Check it out, and get an answer to that age old question: Do feminists like giving blow jobs?

My plane will be arriving shortly

[edited 6/25/06 due to general pronoun confusion — and also in case some of my new relatives google me and land on this blog]

Weddings are depressing –

You see the faces of your relatives for the first time in a long long time — most older, some younger. You see a flicker of your face in theirs. It’s like staring at your own mortality, greeting it, grasping its hand –

Cooperstown has great recycling bins. With their bottles-only snouts, they’re shaped to receive the recyclables from the diehard recyclers –

Long live love –

Cooperstown update

Posted by Siel in caffeine, fairtrade, travel, cooperstown (June 23, 2006 at 11:34 am)

2 flight delays and a long car ride later, we’re settled in Cooperstown. Our cell phones’ve all gone on strike — only Cingular works up here, apparently :(

On the upside — I’m enjoying checking out the reader-recommended spots.

So far, I’ve had lunch at Danny’s Market and coffee at Stagecoach Coffee — which does have some fair trade blends, though, unfortunately, none were brewing when I stopped by yesterday.

Also — we’re staying at a nice local bed and breakfast called Nelson Avenue Pines (pic left).

It’s cute and quaint; more importantly, it has free wifi :)

Which almost makes up for the fact that — because Budget didn’t have any economy-sized cars despite the fact that I’d reserved one — I’m stuck driving an SUV. AAAHHHH!!!!!

The poetics of upstate NY

Posted by Siel in travel, cooperstown (June 19, 2006 at 9:09 am)

A convo last week about my sister’s upcoming wedding, with my poet friend Amy, starting in medias res:

Me: I don’t have to be in the wedding, but I’m supposed to read a poem. Meaning I have to write one. Tomorrow.

Amy: Wedding poems are tough.

Me: The best way seems to be write about an abstraction. You know, like a tree.

Amy: So long’s it’s not too sappy. Ha ha.

The sappy yet treeless poem’s been written, and on Tuesday, I’ll get on a gas-guzzling plane with my mom and fly to Albany, where we’ll get in a gas-guzzing rental car and drive up to Cooperstown, NY.

For the enviro record: I got my sis fluffy organic towels for her wedding gift :) But — Any advice for what I should check out once I get to this Cooperstown place? Yes, I’ve alredy heard about the baseball hall of fame, but I’m looking for coffee, wine, and good eats, i.e. not hotdogs –
