Cell phone radiation worries — and how to reduce your health risks

The debate over potential risks of cell phone radiation continues. Last week, NY Times gave some coverage to the health risks of cell phones with an article that asks, Should You Be Snuggling With Your Cellphone?

The piece looks at some of the worrying studies I’ve written about here — as well as a new book by epidemologist Devra Davis called “Disconnect: The Truth About Cell Phone Radiation, What the Industry Has Done to Hide It, and How to Protect Your Family,” which “concludes that the question is not yet settled” when it comes to the effects of cell phone radiation.

What’s a cell phone owner to do? Don’t have the cell phone too close to you, whether it’s pressed up against your ear or against your body in your shirt pocket. That advice is the same as those given by Environmental Working Group, which has warned about cell phone radiation risks in the past.

Holding the phone away from your body is the best way to reduce radiation risks, according to NY Times, but EWG also offers other tips for radiation worry warts — and even has a “Get a Safer Phone” feature to help you pick a low radiation phone — or to see just how high your phone’s radiation emission is.

Unfortunately, my Blackberry doesn’t score well — a big reason why I think I’m going to end up switching carriers when my service contract ends with Credo Mobile. The company’s great and green, but doesn’t offer enough safer cell phone options. In the meantime, I’m going to try to get in the habit of using my headset more often when talking on my Blackberry.

  1. I think that to some extent, radiation concerns play into my strong preference for texting over phone calls. Well, that and I don’t really like talking to people.

  2. Have you seen any studies that look at radiation from things like blue tooth? Or do you use a wired headset? I’ve got a wired headset for my phone, and I keep meaning to use it more often. I’ve definitely started leaving my phone in my purse or backpack instead of putting it in my pocket.
