• CalArts dude sews in front of a grocery store to make and give away reusable bags on Earth Day, asking freebie takers to sign a pledge saying they’ll use the bag for a minimum of 6 months. (via unbeiged; pic from paper nor plastic)
• Olives entice science boys. Caltech kids whack olive trees, make oil, then get a free dinner — and catalyze a sizeable olive oil biz at their school.



• Organic coffee fans: Equal Exchange delivered its letter in support of small-scale farmers around the world to the USDA, and says “The USDA assured us that they had heard from us, and you, ‘loud and clear’ and that in ‘two or three days’ they would issue a statement that they thought would make us ‘happy.’” Look for updates here.
• Creating a green community that’ll benefit the currently impoverished, not just the LOHAS crowd. In this interview, Van Jones, the co-founder and President of the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, says “we need to have a policy that says, ‘All for green, and green for all.’ We can’t just expect working class people, poor people and people of color to do as we are told …. and have no stake in the positive things that are coming down the pipe.

The LOHAS conference media relations people, BTW, turned down my request for a press pass — an experience that’s rather new to me since I only ask for passes to events that relate to my blog. Don’t they know who I am? :P But I’d asked for one on behalf of Worldchanging, vs. green LA girl — which weirdly, I’m learning, is usually not a good idea. In any case, the “Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability” peeps can really come off as both rich and stingy….
