LA Times budget balancer

>> Take a crack at balancing the California budget, if you don’t like what Schwarzenegger and your elected representatives are trying to do. The LA Times’ interactive budget balancer’ll also give you a better sense of our budget in general, since it provides info about current spending and expected results of cuts or new taxes. My main complaint is that I can’t raise the gas taxes by more than 32 cents a gallon.

>> Or try Next 10′s California Budget Challenge, “an interactive game which allows you to create your own version of the state budget that reflects your vision for California’s future – reflecting your values through the state budget spending.” (via CLVC)

>> The green job market’s growing fast, especially in California, according to Pew Charitable Trusts’ Clean Energy Economy study.

>> Win WordPress upgrade help. My wordpress guru Kim Woodbridge is giving away a free upgrade to WordPress 2.8 — or an hour of her WordPress-related expertise. All who enter will be eligible for 10% off Kim’s services. Enter by June 17!

>> Pesticides and Parkinson’s disease: More scientific studies point to a link between popular pesticides and the neurodegenerative disease.

  1. On the budget, I did as much as I was willing to do, raising every tax (I’m a commie, what can I say), and only eliminating things that seemed to have little effect on social services. I was still 3 billion in the red. Geez. :(

This is a bit off topic, but I recently did a little research into using the lottery for (supposedly) educational funding. I’m convinced we should do away with it. As an Alabama study called it, it’s “theft by consent”. It doesn’t actually mean more money is going to education, and creates more problems than it solves.

  3. Carrick — I raised every tax too! That was actually a lot less painful than cutting anything :)

Kim — I want to enter, but I feel like I should give other people a chance –
