Clicklist: Bicycles and Zipcars

Park(ing) Day 2008 in Santa Monica>> Pedestrians and cyclists are finally going to be counted! The first Los Angeles Bicycle and Pedestrian Count happens throughout the city next week. The goal: To get a sense of how many people are walking and biking, as right now, we only know how many cars go by. Run by the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition (LACBC), the count will be done at 50 or so locations by 200 or so volunteers. (via LAist)

>> Streetsblog’s canceled the Santa Monica leg of its Park(ing) Day Ride alleging that Santa Monica’s got no temporary parks planned for Park(ing) Day, an annual event where car parking spots get turned into parks, happening this Friday — but I beg to differ! We’ve got one park — unfortunately named the Venice Environment Park, which I think led to the confusion — on Main at Hill.

In any case, the Streetsblog Park(ing) Day Ride will now begin at 9 am in Culver City. There’s no way I’m biking all the way to Culver City at that unreasonable hour, so I’ll have to content myself with visiting the one park….

>> Car-sharing company Zipcar’s expanding in L.A.! Back in January 2008, Zipcar bought up Flexcar — of which I was a customer — and unceremoniously pulled cars from all locations except at USC and UCLA. Now Zipcar’s expanding to, um, USC and UCLA — where 12 more cars will be added in the surrounding neighborhoods. This new pilot program was lauded by Mayor Villaraigosa and L.A. City Council President Eric Garcetti, who announced the expansion earlier this week.

Will we ever get Zipcars back in the other neighborhoods so we can get rid of our cars, again? According to a city press release, this pilot program’s “intended as a first step toward a potentially larger expansion in the Los Angeles area.” Damien at Streetsblog LA sounds hopeful about it –

  1. This could be a benefit to the University Park neighborhood.
