>> Yes, bicycles are v. v. popular right now. Reports The Economist: “Giant Manufacturing, the world’s largest bicycle-maker, sold a record 460,000 units last month and is heading for its best year ever.” (via ideas)

>> That explains the bike overcrowding we’re seeing in LA. Peggy Archer of LAist sees a bike rack that only allows tenants to tie up to it.

>> Check out Wired’s gallery of Baddest Bikes at Interbike to see “wicker-basket frames, cherry wood finishes and bikes fit for Batman himself.” Here’s LA Times’ less picturesque article on the same bike event.

>> In Santa Cruz, Craig Calfee creates bikes from bamboo, grown bonsai-style. Cost $2,700 each.

>> World’s new record for a human-powered vehicle: 82.3 mph. Bike builder Sam Whittingham from British Columbia takes that claim to fame.
