Clicklist: Big whoppers

>> Whopper Virgins: Burger King’s film documenting its attempt to supersize the world. In this 7-minuted film, Burger King tries to feed Whoppers to unsuspecting indigenous peoples. Watch it below, then read Grist’s take on it:

as the film progresses … the real irony begins. The Americans offer up Whoppers and many people actually refuse to eat them. One man in Greenland actually professes that he likes his seal meat better. And when the locals offer up their food — colorful homemade dishes piping hot and full of vegetables and rice — the American crew devours it eagerly.

>> Whopper Sacrifice: Lose friends, win Whopper. Love Whoppers more than Facebook friends? Drop 10 friends from Facebook for a free Whopper thanks to another bizarre Burger King promotion. (via Lifehacker)

Update, 1/16/09: This Burger King promotion got nixed for violating a Facebook policy.

>> Whopper power, recycled: Vegawatt lets restaurants burn used frying oil for electric power. Since the machine lets restaurants do away with oil-hauling services, “it provides convenience for restaurateurs or Burger King managers, instead of subtracting it.”

  1. What really concerned me about the stupid virgin whopper marketing stunt was that these people who eat their normal diet all their lives would be fed something so odd, they they would actually get sick later on after eating it- which if course would not be on camera…
or did they use local ingredients to try and keep the people from getting ill later - i can’t imagine they could suddenly stomoach so many hormones, artifcial chems and shitty meats??!?

  2. Does the Whopper Sacrifice allow the victims to know who sold them down the river?

  3. David — Yes, which is actually why the promo got nixed. It violated Facebook’s policy of NOT notifying people when they’re unfriended.
