protester against Starbuck's local-washing>> Forget greenwashing. The latest false corporate move’s to jump on the buy local bandwagon — in their ads. Grist has a pictorial tour of corporate local-washing. Starbucks gets called out, as does Wal-Mart: “Banners saying simply “Local” hang above the produce sections at some Wal-Marts. Don’t ask questions.”

>> Built to burn! Cali law encourages buildings in areas sure to burn. “In 1968, the state legislature mandated that every property owner must be able to buy affordable fire insurance, no matter how risky their location,” reports New Scientist. The rest is history, as in SoCal’s annual wildfire celebration.

>> Here’s a coffee table for those seeking drought-resistant gardens: The Dry Gardening Handbook: Plants and Practices for a Changing Climate by Olivier Filippi. According to the L.A. Times review: “It is this combination of hands-on gardening tips and fantasy splendor that makes this book so special. That and a certain cunning. Filippi seems to be reaching for the elite who can most afford to waste water.” Earlier:  Free rain barrels and installation from the city.
