>> Flummoxed by all the health advice out there? Thomas Goetz, author of a new book called The Decision Tree: Taking Control of Your Health in the New Era of Personalized Medicine, says “health is really just a system of inputs and outputs” and there’s a lot you can take charge of — by creating a simple decision tree and using iPhone apps or other next-generation monitoring gadgets to make healthier habits permanent. >> Which is greener — Glasses or contacts? Slate tackles this question — and doesn’t really come to a concrete conclusion. What the article doesn’t consider, however, is that pretty much every contacts-wearer also owns glasses, while full-time glasses wearers are unlikely to own contacts. Thus my conclusion is that the glasses-only people are the greenest. The bigger question, perhaps, is whether eco-boys make more passes at green girls who wear glasses.

Maybe it is glasses, but as someone who wears contacts and owns glasses, I’ve had the same glasses for 5+ years since my prescription hasn’t changed significantly in that time. If I was wearing glasses daily, I don’t know if they would have made it so long since I would have probably updated my prescription and speaking from past experience, I don’t know if the frames themselves would have made it that long without simply falling apart or getting destroyed in some other accident….

That’s a good point — I’ve had my glasses for about that long too — and I just realized I’ve had the same frames for over a decade! :)

I’m a daily glasses wearer and my glasses have made it four years (so far). My sunglasses would have made it the same had I not lost them on my way back from Chicago at Christmas time.

Oh, I do suppose keeping the same frames and just changing lenses is probably extra green.
I feel bad because I actually own 5 pairs of glasses. Yes. My prescription hasn’t changed in a solid decade, and I tend to get new glasses every two years. I don’t frequently wear most of the pairs, but I like the way they all look, so I haven’t passed them on. Maybe it’s time for me to either re-evaluate or consciously work on switching out frames. On the plus side, I do wear the old ones for sports and the like so that I don’t break my really nice pair.
Came here to say that I love your Dorothy Parker reference :-)

Hey Leah — If you find you haven’t worn one of those pairs in a while, remember you can donate them to a good cause :)
