>> Regret the Error put up its annual list of media errors and corrections, and this one from Slate made me LOL (via kottke):
In the June 20 “Culturebox,” Jonah Weiner stated that Lil Wayne was the first hip-hop artist to fantasize about eating his competition. Other rappers have contemplated consuming their rivals.
Here’s another tasty correction, this one from the BBC:
Some Israelis may have choked on their breakfast when a newspaper headline quoted France’s foreign minister saying Israel might devour its arch foe, Iran. Hebrew daily Haaretz splashed across its front page that Bernard Kouchner said Israel might “eat” the Islamic Republic before it got nuclear arms. The following day Haaretz apologised, saying Mr Kouchner, speaking in English, had actually said “hit”.
The list also notes that The Yes Men’s spoof edition of The New York Times went so far as to include spoof corrections like this one:
“Special Interests”
The Times has in the past used the term “special interests” to describe unions, environmentalists and even whole ethnic groups, and has used the word “pandering” when politicians take these groups’ concerns into account. We have typically not, however, used “pandering” to refer to politicians catering to the interests of corporations. The Times regrets that our use of such language may have given the impression that the interests of corporations are more important than those of citizens.
