Clicklist: For the capitalist love of clunkers

>> Watch the trailer for Michael Moore’s new film, Capitalism, A Love Story. The movie opens in theaters October 2nd!

Drinking: A Love Story by Carolyn Knapp’s also a great read, if you’re looking for things to do while waiting for the film to get to your theater.

>> The Cash for Clunkers program ends Monday, but Portland’s Joe Bike’s come up with a Joe Bike Cash for Clunkers that gives you great discounts on new bikes in exchange for your old car or bike.

>> Eat against extinction. Eco-foodies want you to start snacking on Sebastopol Gravenstein apples to keep farmers growing the now-rare fruits.

  1. I started buying cars in 1992 and have had a total of four. According to the criterion, none of them were ‘clunkers’(I seem to recall some clunking, but w/e).

I would have preferred to see more stringent criteria for the new cars, especially with regard to size and fuel economy. The point of the plan was to sell cars as much as to improve fuel efficiency.

Being without a car is the best option. I am pretty happy without a car.

  2. Well, the clunkers thing had a lot of serious problems — as do many programs that have to do with cleaner driving. For ex., in Cali you get more of a financial incentive to carpool to work / school than you do to walk or bike, despite the fact that carpooling’s still way more carbon intensive, polluting, and costly (in terms of parking spaces) for work / school to provide.

If we were able to put the kind of money Cash for Clunkers got towards things like Bikes for Clunkers, taxpayers would get a lot more bang for their buck.
