  • Noho gets some color in its crosswalks! Hot or not, Zach Behrens asks –
  • Read freely! Top 10 places to get free books, legally. Actually, this is part I, so it’s really just 5 places. 5 good places though! (via lifehacker)
  • Scary pesticides go to Amvac Chemical Corp, an LA-based company that’s buying up the rights to pesticides and chemicals that other companies’ve dropped because they’re likely to be banned or restricted due to health concerns.

The scary thing’s that Amvac’s doing damn well financially: “While profitable, Amvac’s focus on older pesticides has come at a cost to human health and the environment, according to EPA and state records, regulatory investigations and a string of lawsuits.” Amvac’s holdings include a pesticide that left “nearly three dozen workers” with “low or zero sperm counts.” If the stuff’s banned in the US, Amvac sells it overseas — to transnational companies like Dow and Dole.

“The company faces a lawsuit charging that the DBCP it made sterilized agricultural workers in Nicaragua. The suit is scheduled to go to trial in Los Angeles this year. Amvac and its fellow defendants, including Dow and Dole, say there is no proof the workers were harmed by the pesticide.”

  • Say no to Dole Foods.

Update, 4/9/07: Amvac’s been seriously polluting Newport Beach too.
