>> More women are drinking — and women drinkers are drinking more. Men, on the other hand, are drinking less. The gender gap is closing! (via ideas)
The trend is so pronounced that in Britain, home to the Bridget Joneses of the world, public-health officials launched an ad campaign picturing a grizzled man in drag (or a very mannish woman) with the caption: “If you drink like a man, you might end up looking like one.”
The bad news is that “women get addicted with lower levels of consumption and they get addicted faster” and “women develop alcohol-related diseases more quickly than men.”
The less dour tidbits: Apparently, the girls at Jezebel.com are big drinkers. And “the more educated a woman is, the more likely she will be to drink throughout her life.”
>> A related repeat: The smarter a woman is, the more she’ll drink? A study finds that “higher intelligence scores at age 10 may be associated with higher levels of alcohol intake and alcohol-related drinking problems during adulthood,” especially for girls.
I blame my drinking habit on being tragically intelligent and well-educated.

Cheers to that. There’s nothing wrong with occasionally having at least one drink every day.

Siel, thank you. You have finally given me the perfect rationalization for my love of booze! I’m simply too smart to stop drinking. ;)

lol. i love all these comments, but my first thought when i saw that statement – “higher intelligence scores at age 10 may be associated with higher levels of alcohol intake and alcohol-related drinking problems during adulthood” – was that women who are smart are given more grief throughout life from our male-dominated society and thus are more driven to drink.
