Clicklist: Goats, rivers, and Republicans

>> Goats replace gas-guzzling weed whackers! “Leaders of the Los Angeles Community Redevelopment Agency hired 100 goats to nibble away thick weeds on a steep slope at the corner of 4th and Hill streets, next to the Angels Flight funicular.” blogdowntown has some cute photos.

>> And goats are wanted in Nebraska too! Cattle ranchers like ‘em because “the goats will go straight for the weeds – eating, trampling and fertilizing the entire pasture.”

>> The LA River gets a new website, with info on the river’s revitalization plan. Tour the river in person this Sunday! (via Eric Garcetti’s blog)

>> Why Republicans should support sustainable urban development: “one doesn’t have to be concerned about climate change at all in order to support such policies; values of fiscal conservatism and localism, both key to Republican ideology, can be better realized through population-dense development than through sprawl.” (via Ideas)

>> What makes people vote Republican, when their self-interests would be better met via the Democratic party? “This is the first rule of moral psychology: feelings come first and tilt the mental playing field on which reasons and arguments compete. If people want to reach a conclusion, they can usually find a way to do so. The Democrats have historically failed to grasp this rule, choosing uninspiring and aloof candidates who thought that policy arguments were forms of persuasion.” (via Ideas)

  1. Unfortunately, those with the money to afford extensive lawns tend to shy away from goat-come-lawnmowers.

  2. Hopefully they can afford snazzy electric lawn mowers –

  3. As an additional perk, the goats are probably eating all trash carelessly thrown by others as well as providing free fertilizer for a greener GREENER Los Angeles!
