Monterey Bay Aquarium Sustainable Seafood Guide for Sushi>> NRDC’s put together its own Sustainable Seafood Guide, with some quick overall tips for newbies (via grist). I just go with my Monterey Bay Aquarium Sustainable Seafood Guide. Earlier: Greenpeace’s latest seafood sustainability scorecard. Can’t these nonprofits just work together and produce one guide?

>> Beyond just not eating endangered fish, save the oceans by refusing disposable plastics, says Captain Charles Moore of the Algalita Foundation.

>> If you aren’t going to the free screening of ocean-inspired eco-docu The End of the Line at UCLA tonight, watch bits and pieces of The End of the Line webisodes at Babelgum.

  1. In my past life, I worked for a group called the Marine Fish Conservation Network. The reason the cards have different fish listed in different places is because they have different ideas of what is sustainable. For example, some of the cards only take into account the health of the fish stocks, others take into account the fishing practices used to catch the fish and others will even take into account the transport of the fish (i.e. the carboon footprint of the delivery). I can’t remember which is which, it’s been seven years since I was with the Netrwork, but the card I carry is Monterey Bay’s.

  2. I see your point — I think Monterey tries to cover the bases with a little coding system (i.e. icons that distinguish those on the list for high mercury levels vs. species depletion). Still, I really wish these groups would work more together. It’s hard to feel motivated to donate money to their causes if it seems like they’re simply duplicating work while splitting hairs with each others’ methods….
