Yesterday my friend Jeff invited me to a birthday party for “someone special to all of us, ‘my future wife’” — someone to whom, despite the quotation marks, he is still engaged to — which reminded me of The “Blog” of “Unnecessary” Quotation Marks. If you don’t read this blog yet, you’re “not” a loser. Some eco-flavored punctuation fun:
>> This sign may be a passive-aggressive way of telling people to bring their own reusable mugs. Need a “cup,” anyone?

>> This pizza maker’s so concerned about the “environment” it gives you a very unclear eco tip. Carefully tuck the used box into the landfill?

>> The foundation for any “sustainable” garden.

>> An ironic statement about how the term natural never actually meant anything? Finally — truth in advertising –

The many press releases I get that brag about “our new ‘eco-friendly’ product” or “this ‘green’ product” always makes me snicker — It’s like the company’s warning me up front that the product’s totally greenwashed. Anyway — Check out The “Blog” of “Unnecessary” Quotation Marks while “at work.” I think my latest fave’s the sociopathic cake decorator. Congrats on the upcoming “wedding,” “Jeff” –

LOL!!!! As a former English major and teacher of grammar, this one bugs the hell out of me. I guess some people (who didn’t pay attention in their English classes, apparently) feel that quotation marks are the equivalent of bold or italics, and somehow never got the memo that it actually means “not so much”. Ugh.

The blog seriously cracks me up whenever I visit it. Today I actually was actively looking for quotation mark misuse while going about town — but unfortunately Santa Monica businesses seem to be unusually good punctuators. Keeping my eyes open though :)
